When you suggested I try using Slackware instead of FreeBSD, I had to alias ee to pico (I still can't stand using Vi, I don't care how powerful it is).

Try using Windows Notepad after extensive use of 'vi'.
I don't know how many times I typed ':wq!', pressed enter and closed the app. When the dialogue popped up to save the document, I'm like "I already did, wtf? Oh! yeah."
