My old nemesis, bandwidth
September 22, 2009
I have you now!
Ok, it might be a little bit premature to start monologuing, but I definitely have a plan.
The underlying problem is that data does not want to be in two places at once. It just doesn’t. Coercing it to do so is expensive.
Right now, I’m meddling in slow, low speed links like DSL lines and T1s. As I found out today, metro ethernet is available for my NYC office (I’m opting for 5Mb/s symmetrical) and another company is getting ready to light up my New Jersey office building with fiber, which will enable us to get a 15Mb symmetrical line, plus a much cheaper PRI for our phones.
Overall, I’m going to save a few hundred bucks, plus increase my users quality of life. A win in all ways.

I guess I have to give you bonus points for including a Wikipedia link to “monologue” of all things. Enjoy the fatter tubes.

As we recently upgraded all our lines for our offices, I can certainly say its awesome. Remote backups FTW. Now i don’t have to harp on people about watching so many Youtube videos either.

we don’t really have anyone in the office complaining about bandwidth. it tends to be people connecting in that hate us using our own pipe (4mb symmetric btw)

@Ben – Thanks (and thanks for the bonus points. I love the verb usage of “monologue”)
@Rick – That’s great! I’m really looking forward to the ability backup things faster, for sure!
@Chewy – Ah. Our services are provided out of a colocation that has 10Mb symmetric, and we don’t have any complaints there. It’s just my users who complain (and legitimately)
