Back to our regularly scheduled administration

Date November 9, 2009

So yes, the week in Baltimore was fun, but today I came back into the office and thought “What was it that I do here again?”

Fortunately there was plenty of work to help jog my memory. I’ve been cleaning up some of the untidiness from my absence and working on a medium range timeline for implementing IPv6, as well as talking to some vendors about WAN acceleration appliances. I’m getting a network upgrade before too long, but I’m interested in the technology and curious about how it works. At the same time, it never hurts to have ballpark prices for the next year.

Before I left, I had some problems with some new machines and had to send one back. Of course, the motherboard just now arrived at Penguin Computing, so the machine should be arriving in the next couple of days. Kickstarting that is going to be on my list, as well as finally rolling out Puppet, at least in a smallish environment.

Overall, I’m looking forward to this comparatively easy time at work. In contrast, some of you may have heard, but my live outside of work is going to get considerably busier. I’ll write more about that tomorrow!

Hey Matt, not sure how much you’ve used Puppet before but I started using it recently at work and seriously impressed with it’s capabilities. I’m converting over some system build scripts and It’s a little different getting used to the functional programming style but loving the power it has. Whats your experience been with it so far?

I’d be interested here what kind of information you find on the WAN Acceleration apps.
