Starting a NYC LOPSA Chapter

Date November 14, 2010

I'm a big fan of getting together with other sysadmins in "real" life (yes, yes, the internet is real...). That's one of the reasons I started the SysAdmin Appreciation Day meetup in NYC, and one of the reasons that I infrequently attend the LOPSA-NJ meetings. I would go a lot more often, but it's really pretty far for me, and traffic is horrible. If only there were some kind of large population center with mass transit...

Tonight, I sent out this email to around 50 email addresses:

Hello!

My name is Matt Simmons, and I'm starting a LOPSA chapter in New York City.

This email has reached you because you have expressed your desire to
attend (or be otherwise informed of) meetings in the area. If this is
no longer the case, please let me know, and I'll happily remove you
from my list of people to contact.

Assuming you're still interested (and why wouldn't you be?), that's
great! You can't see everyone else, but there are right around 50
people who are being sent this email, and I'm going to post an entry
on my blog, as well. I am very confident that we'll start out very
strong and keep on growing.

The two things left to decide at this point are when do we first want
to meet, and where should it happen?

As for the first question, I would like to avoid the first week of the
month, if only because it would overlap with LOPSA-NJ
(http://lopsa-nj.org/about-LOPSA-NJ), and I know we're going to have
some overlap (including myself), and two meetings a week is a bit much
to ask people. That being said, I would also like to keep it on
weeknights. What are your thoughts?

And as for where it should be, I don't know. I've been to a NYC-LUG
(http://www.nylug.org/) meeting, and they tend to migrate around to
various businesses that have meeting space available. I'm completely
fine with that, unless your company has a suitable space (my company's
NYC office is much more like a closet). Again, if you have (or know
of) a good site, please suggest it.

In the meantime, it would facilitate discussion if there were a
discussion list for this group, and as luck would have it, there is!

This is the NYC LOPSA chapter mailing list, which has been around for
quite a while, despite there being no chapter. We aim to fix that.

Thanks for your time, and I hope to hear back from you soon.

Absolutely interested in attending meeting, and helping get things started if a little noob like me can be of any service. Thanks for the effort, Matt!

  • Devin

I would be interested in attending. Living in LI, the NJ chapter is just too far to attend.

Cat and Devin: Awesome! That's really great. We're going to have an outstanding group in no time!

Devin, make sure to sign up for the mailing list: https://lists.lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/lopsa-us-ny-nyc

Starting later this week, stuff will be going out on that discussing when and where to meet.

Thanks for the comments and your interest!

    Matt,

I'd be interested (with several other people here at Daylife), and we'd be happy to provide a meeting space, as well. We have a large office near Broadway and Canal in Manhattan, so convenient for a lot of public transportation (including PATH). Let me know if you're interested - my first name at daylife.com.

    Matt,

I just discovered your blog and LOPSA. I live on LI so the NJ meets are just too far for me. I'd definitely be interested.

    Matt,

This is great, I've often wondered why NYC didn't have a chapter. Count me in as a prospective member and yes, I've signed up for the mailing list. I hope we can all make this happen!
